this is once again a case of an unsuitable paradigm of developed (Western) democracy applied to analyse a foreign soil of post-Soviet (though what is 'a popular love to the authorities' and where does that notion come from is a true mystery).

practically, each point highlighted was true for ukraine at any stage of its latest history, and it never mentions the decisive factors under them.

what is different and unique for the current state of affairs (quite tellingly omitted in the article)- his shovelling off his former patrons and 'well-doers' who brought him into politics in 1997 as 'a dummy' to secure the maximization of the revenues under newly invented illegal shemes.

his regime, the one of his family and their trusted servants, is going to be the harshest one in the ukrainian history, disregarding whatever public or even so-called oligarchs may think. and it will need a real popular revolt to turn it down - which will be countered with force and determination. unfortunately, there is not a hint in this direction in the text.

When a researcher writes an article attempting to analyze recent events in Ukraine based on a premise of similarity with Russia, when in fact the two countries are possessed of entirely different socio-economic contexts, this says more about the assumptions or lack of analytical capacity of the researcher than about the topic in question. Might as well compare Ukraine to Venezuela and Yanukovych to Hugo Chavez.
